SONG OF THE DAY FOR OCTOBER 10, 2011: WORKING MAN BY RUSH

Bow before your gods, fanboys! The Canadian Triumvirate known by the masses as Rush has been the golden idol you've worshiped for far too long. I have come down from Mount Sinai with the Rock and Roll Commandments and will smash the vile beast of rock music. No longer will you suck from their teats, slaves!

I'm kidding so clam down. Overall, Rush is a good band and I have some respect for their catalog. I chose 'Working Man' because it is a good way to start the work week. It's nice to see our friends from Canada delivering a rock anthem for the proletariat. I really debated picking this song because I have a love/hate relationship with Rush.

Let me tell you what my problems are with Rush is so you can see my point of view. They said the Velvet Underground sold one thousand albums but spawned a thousand bands. Rush sold millions of albums and spawned millions of IT professionals, computer engineers, and fanboys. There's nothing wrong with that, but I cringe when Rush fans say that their beloved band is a "thinking man's band". OK, there's my problem. The lyrics from Rush are good but by no means are they the deepest in rock. These fans can't be serious that Rush is better at writing intelligent lyrics than Bob Dylan, Pete Townshend, Elvis Costello, Paul Westerberg, or Robert Pollard. Also, stop gushing over the technical prowess of this band. Neil Peart has awesome drum solos. Tommy Lee has awesome drum solos. Know what Neil doesn't have that Tommy does? A rock and roll lifestyle that goes beyond the legendary levels. Yes, Neil probably has millions in the bank that wasn't wasted on coke, strippers, experts on disposing bodies, lawyers, and ex-wives. My point here is that for all of the finesse this band has, they lack excitement, danger, and all things cool in rock. I guess I can respect guys that want to fly under the radar, but smash a guitar on your next tour.

  1. Tommy Lee also has a huge penis.

  2. Viewed through the lens of Rush's Ayn Rand bullshit, I'm not sure this should be considered pro-Labor.
